A square of hessian fabric, approximately 45cm x 45cm (18 inches x 18 inches). For lining open-mesh aquatic baskets (crates) or enclosing root balls.
Modern open-mesh baskets have relatively fine mesh and do not generally require a hessian liner in order to hold the soil in. However, if you are using very fine powdery or sandy soil, have significant water movement, have disturbance from fish or water birds, or are using an old-fashioned large-mesh basket, you may still need a liner.
As a guide, if carefully cut into appropriately-sized pieces, one hessian square will be just enough to line:
-
Two of our large round 4-litre baskets, or
- Three of our small round 2-litre baskets, or
- Four of our mini round 1-litre baskets
But if you do not want to bother cutting it up, use one hessian square per basket.
